General
When should I get my gear/boat repaired?Generally the best time is in the off season, so arrange for repairs at the end of the paddling season to avoid a long wait time during summer. The shop is the busiest from March through to July. The shop is shutdown each summer at some point in June/July to Mid September (Varies year to year). Contact PSR for actual current dates for the given year. Trailer rentals typical continue during most of this period.
When should I pick up my boat or gear?As soon as possible after notification the work is complete.
PSR has had to implement high storage fees to coax customers to pick up their complete repairs. See your invoice.
PSR is not a storage facility nor do we want to be. In the past we have seen boats left here for more than a decade (Yes, a decade). One boat was left for 14 years, suits for 6 years, and every winter PSR ends up with one or two boats all winter. PSR has had to turn work away as the shop was full of completed work that could not be stored outside. Turning repairs away is not fair to PSR and other PSR customers. Please pick up your gear and boats promptly.
Can I have a rush job done?March to July everybody is in a rush, even when it needed repair last season. Contact PSR, we will try to accommodate you but make no promises at all on rush jobs.
I tried, or someone tried, to fix my gear and it did not work out. Can you fix it now?Don’t be surprised if the answer is “not anymore” or “maybe,” depending what has been done and what it is, so no promises.
Is duct (duck) tape a good solution for anything? No. If you need to do a field-repair on your gear using duct tape, remove it as soon as possible, as well as the adhesive residue. PSR charges for Duct tape removal based on time and material. The longer it has been on, the longer it takes to get it off.
Will composite, fibreglass, or carbon repairs be as strong? Will they be heavier than the original?Repairs are typically as strong or stronger than original layup. Weight gain is minimal or undetectable.
If I want to try to fix my own gear what should I use?Simply, the right material for the job. Stay away from duct tape, Gorilla glue or tape, Marine Goop, silicone, putting in larger screws, crazy glue, polyester resin, G Flex, and Kevlar for repairs.
Is there anything I should do before bringing in my gear or boat?Yes:
- Supply your name, address, and contact details. Be sure to include an email address.
- Remove all tapes and tape residue.
- Wash your boat or clean your gear.
- Apparel should be dry.
- Take everything out of your boat.
What product lines do you retail? Please see the Retail section of the website.

Gaskets and Drysuits
Can you put Gortex booties on my suit?It may be possible elsewhere, but PSR does not and will not do it. It’s very labour-intensive (read expensive) and very difficult to get the seams sealed.
How long does it take to replace a gasket on my drysuit or dry top?Typically three days are required to replace a gasket due to cure time of the adhesive but turnaround time is dependent on the shop workload. Keep in mind the spring season is very, very busy.
Should I cut my neck gasket down if they are to tight?Gaskets on most paddle sports apparel have a tunnel that is parallel to a wide contact area. If the gasket is tight and you cut it down, the contact area is reduced and it may feel as tight or tighter. You should have a larger gasket installed as they are available in four sizes.
How long should my gaskets last? Two to seven years is typical, but the range is dependent on several factors. General care, the amount of annual use, the use of bug spray, sunscreen, as well as oils in your own skin, can affect lifespan.
Can you replace the zipper in my suit?Yes, zippers can be replaced in some suits. Generally these are simpler suits, without the skirt tunnel overlay on them. Zippers are expensive and labour intensive.
Can you install a pee-zipper?Yes, in some suits, but a zipper installation is expensive and cost is not proportional to the length of the zipper.

Boats
What types of boats do you work on?At PSR, when we say “boat” we are referring to Canoes, Kayaks, Inflatables and SUPs
I have spider cracks or chips in my gel coat should I get it repaired?Gel coat on canoes and kayaks is there purely for esthetics (colour and smooth finish). With larger fiberglass powerboats that might sit in the water most of their life, the gel coat resists osmosis. Canoes and Kayak spend a very small percentage of their life in the water. For this reason, osmosis is not a concern for canoes and kayaks. Gel coat repairs are purely esthetic. Spider cracks my have structural damage behind them. They should be assessed.
Should I get my Gel redone?Buy a new boat. If you truly need the gel coat redone, buying a new boat is the most economical solution. Please spend some time researching gelcoat and its application for repairs as it is extremely labour intensive, on an area as large as a kayak or canoe.
It is likely that you only need a polish to improve the look of your boat. PSR will do polishing but only in warmer weather as it needs to be done outside, due to the mess it makes in the shop.
Do you work on inflatables?Yes, we work on most inflatables. Please don’t waste my time or your money with the cheap inflatables. They are not worth repairing.
My plastic boat as a crack in it, can it be fixed?Yes, most plastics can be welded or glued back together using the proper technique and materials.
My plastic boat has a hole worn through in the stern what I can do about it?It likely can be welded or patched and you should stop dragging your boat.
Do you stock parts for my canoe or kayak?PSR does not stock parts for any boats other than some common hardware. There are just way to many canoes and kayaks out there to even begin to stock parts.
I do manufacturer seats and yokes for canoes and carry skeg cable for sea kayaks.
Can canoes or kayaks previously used as rentals be repaired?Rental canoes and kayaks usually have seen a lot of abuse. Outfitters do seasonal repairs or repairs to sell them. Very rarely are these proper repairs. The repairs are often hiding major structural damage and usually are flawed, as the correct preparation for the repair was skipped or inadequate, leading to bonding issues. PSR will not likely take on the repair of a rental fleet boat.

-
Paddles
Can you repair a paddle shaft or blade?Yes, almost all.
Can you make my paddle a breakdown? To make a paddle a break down, the shaft must be round for approximately 12 inches. Most paddles today are oval at the grips and allow only for one joint, if the shaft does not have a joint in the middle and most bent shafts do. If the paddle shaft already has a bonded or glued joint in the middle then it can’t be made into a two piece.
-
Shipping
How should I ship my gear?Dry, and with your name, address and contact information PLUS a note describing what you would like done.
Does my gear need to be dry before I send it?If shipping your gear, yes it should be dry as it may not be opened immediately upon arrival and mold can develop quickly. If dropping it off, wet gear will usually be accepted.
